Salou is a mass-tourism resort on the Costa Daurada, in Tarragona province and the comarca of Tarragones. It is not on the Costa Brava: Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar and Roses are Girona province towns, on a different coast. The municipality is small, about fifteen square kilometres, and densely built, and its seventy hotels offer close to thirty one thousand bed places, roughly one for every resident. The visitor economy is the first fact of the place.
Around thirty one thousand people were recorded at the start of 2025 by the annual population census; the padron count runs slightly higher. About a third hold foreign nationality, and no single group dominates: Ukrainians are the largest at under a tenth of the foreign population, followed by Senegalese, Russian, Romanian and Indian residents. Counted by place of birth instead, more than two fifths of residents were born abroad.
The market story is speed at a modest level. Idealista's July 2026 asking price rose by about a seventh over the year, a bigger annual rise than Sitges, Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Roses or Empuriabrava recorded, yet it remains below Salou's own December 2008 peak and cheaper per square metre than Sitges, Tossa de Mar, Roses or Empuriabrava. Be careful with the stock: at the 2021 census nearly two thirds of homes were not principal residences.
The verdict
The upside is real. So is the downside. Both matter more than any brochure will admit.
A new railway station opened June 2025
Salou-PortAventura, Adif 65411, entered service on 19 June 2025. Its 31 August 2026 departure board showed Renfe Rodalies RT2 services toward Tarragona and R17 services toward Barcelona Estacio de Franca.
Cheaper per square metre than Sitges or Roses
Idealista's July 2026 figure for Salou sits below Sitges, Tossa de Mar, Roses and Empuriabrava, and remains under the municipality's own December 2008 peak despite strong recent growth.
Fast year-on-year growth on Idealista's index
Asking prices rose by about a seventh in the year to July 2026, a bigger annual rise than Idealista shows for Sitges, Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Roses or Empuriabrava.
Schools cover every stage within the municipality
Course 2025/2026 data records twelve distinct education centres in Salou, with provision at every stage from nursery through primary and ESO to batxillerat, so a family need not assume schooling lies elsewhere.
A broad international community, no dominant group
About a third of residents hold foreign nationality. The largest single nationality, Ukrainian, is under a tenth of the foreign population, ahead of Senegalese, Russian, Romanian and Indian residents.
Nearly two thirds of homes are not principal
At the 2021 census Salou held about thirty one and a half thousand homes, of which only about eleven and a half thousand were principal residences. The stock leans heavily to holiday and second homes.
The hospital assignment is not settled in print
Hospital Universitari Joan XXIII is published as the reference hospital for the province of Tarragona, a tertiary-level statement. No published source we found states which hospital is Salou's own sector referral.
No climate normals exist for the municipality
No weather station in Salou publishes AEMET climate normals, so this page carries no climate table. Rather than borrow another location's series and present it as Salou's, we leave the climate block empty and say why.
Hotel capacity on the scale of the town
Seventy hotels offer close to thirty one thousand bed places, roughly one for every resident, plus over six thousand camping places. The visitor economy operates at the same scale as the resident town.
Two listed districts carry no published price
Idealista lists eight Salou districts but prices six; Barri de la Salut and Xalets de Salou - Mirador de Salou are unpriced. Idealista also changed its methodology in July 2026, saying comparability was preserved in countries whose series required it.
Editor's note
Salou is a resort first and a town second, and the data says so: hotel bed capacity close to the resident population, and nearly two thirds of homes not principal residences at the 2021 census. If you want a year-round residential fabric with clearer published services, look at Sitges, where two thirds of homes are principal residences, a Rodalies station also serves the town, and a reference hospital is published at comarca level rather than only for the province. If Salou's price level is what drew you, Lloret de Mar sits at similar money with a comparable resort profile, though it has no station and its published rail connection is a combined train and bus ticket via Blanes. Tossa de Mar is far smaller, also without a station, and dearer per square metre than Salou, as are Roses and Empuriabrava. Of the towns named here, only Sitges matches Salou's rail access. Buyers who need a settled hospital assignment or a published climate record will find neither for this municipality, and should weigh that before committing.
